There are more than ten thousand ant species known around the world. More than seven hundred ant species are found in the United States. There are only about twenty-five species that commonly infest homes.

Ant colonies live underground and consist of worker ants, queens, and male ants. Worker ants are female wingless ants that do not reproduce. However, their jobs are to tend to the nest, care for the queen’s offspring, seek and provide food, and protect the colony.

The queens are solely responsible for reproducing and making sure the colony continues to survive. The male ant’s sole purpose is to mate with the queen, once they have performed their duty they may die.

Ants are social insects that can communicate by using chemicals. They use this to alert from danger or to pass along information such as food location. They typically live in colonies underground, in ground-level mounds or in trees. Carpenter ants live in wood causing destruction while army ants do not actually have a home, they constantly seek out food for their colonies.

Most ants are relatively the same in appearance. Whether small or large, brown or black, you can tell it is an ant by the three-body regions. That includes the head, thorax, and abdomen.

They have larger body regions and a tiny “neck” and “waist”. Most often ants are confused with termites due to similarities in their bodies.

Ant infestations are easily caused by poor sanitation, such as food left out and not put into containers, dirty dishes left in the sink and even crumbs left on countertops, tables and on the floor. It only takes a couple of ants to find this and turn your home into their colonies home.
