There are over two thousand species of termites. Even though only about 40 of those species are found in the United States, they cause billions of dollars in structural damage every year. Each species has its own characteristics, however, they all look particularly similar. Termites are approximately one fourth to one half of an inch in length, the have soft bodies and can range in color from white to light brown. Flying termites have to pairs of wings and are often mistaken for flying ants.
Every species of termites need cellulose to live. They have special gut bacteria that helps break down the food into the cellulose needed to survive. Termites use their mandibles, or cusps, to take apart their food and break it up to be ingested. All homes, regardless of the materials used can offer this food to termites.
Termites are referred to as “Silent Destroyers” due to the fact that they can hide well within house walls or yards without any rapid sign of damage. This undetected ongoing destruction could mean extensive repairs or even irreparable damages. Contact a pest professional immediately if you notice any mud tubes used by termites on the exterior of the home, darkening or blistering wood structures, soft wood that sounds hollow or discarded wings near doors or window seals.
