🎃 Halloween Creepy Crawlers: What’s Lurking Around Your Modesto Home?
October has arrived in Modesto, bringing cooler evenings, pumpkins, Halloween decorations, and plenty of spooky fun. But ghosts and goblins aren't the only things that may be creeping around your home this Halloween.
As summer fades and conditions begin to change throughout the Central Valley, homeowners may notice increased activity from some very real creepy crawlers.
Here are a few unwanted visitors you might find lurking around your home this spooky season.
🕷️Spiders: Real-Life Halloween Decorations
Fake spiderwebs might look great stretched across the front porch, but real webs around your home are another story.
Spiders may be found around:
- Exterior lights
- Eaves and rooflines
- Garages
- Patios and outdoor furniture
- Windows and doorways
- Landscaping and other protected areas
Spiders often establish themselves where other insects are available as a food source. That means noticeable spider activity can sometimes be a sign that your property is attracting plenty of other bugs too.
🎃 Halloween Tip:
Before bringing Halloween decorations or storage containers back inside, check them carefully. Items left outside can provide great hiding places for spiders and other pests.
🪳Cockroaches: The Creepers That Don't Need Costumes
Few things are scarier than turning on the garage light and seeing a cockroach run for cover.
Cockroach activity doesn't necessarily disappear just because the hottest days of summer are behind us.
Around Modesto and the Central Valley, outdoor cockroaches may be found near:
- Irrigation and damp landscaping
- Water meter boxes
- Drains
- Utility areas
- Garages
- Mulch and ground cover
- Cracks and gaps around foundations
As outdoor conditions change, cockroaches may wander closer to homes while searching for food, water, and shelter.
🐀Rodents: Something Goes Bump in the Night
Hear scratching or movement after dark?
Before blaming a Halloween ghost, consider another possibility: rodents.
Rats and mice may take advantage of openings around a home to access protected areas such as garages, attics, crawl spaces, and wall voids.
Watch for signs such as:
- Droppings
- Gnaw marks
- Scratching or movement at night
- Damaged food packaging
- Activity around garages or storage areas
Rodents don't need an open front door to get inside. Small gaps, damaged vents, openings around rooflines, and even tree branches touching the structure can contribute to access.
👻Keep an Eye Out This Halloween
Most Halloween decorations are supposed to be creepy. The pests around your home aren't.
If you're noticing an increase in spiders, cockroaches, rodents, or other unwanted visitors, don't ignore the signs.
In Part 2, we'll share ways to make your home less inviting to pests as fall settles into the Central Valley.
Until then, keep the scares in the decorations—not inside your house! 🎃
