PART 1: There's Room at the Table… But Not for Pests!

Thanksgiving Is for Family, Not Uninvited Six-Legged Guests!

The turkey is roasting, the pumpkin pie is cooling, and the family is on their way. You've spent days preparing the perfect Thanksgiving feast, but there's one thing you definitely didn't put on the guest list: pests!

As temperatures begin to cool here in Modesto and throughout California's Central Valley, many insects start searching for warmth, shelter, and easy access to food. Unfortunately, your cozy home and fully stocked holiday kitchen can look pretty inviting to them.

Before you set another place at the table, let's talk about some of the unwanted guests that might try to crash your Thanksgiving celebration.

🐜 1. Ants: The Ultimate Thanksgiving Party Crashers

You may have invited Aunt Susan, but you certainly didn't invite the ants!

With holiday baking, sugary desserts, and food preparation in full swing, ants can find plenty of reasons to explore your kitchen. Even the smallest crumbs, sticky spills, or improperly stored ingredients can attract foraging ants.

Keep ants off the guest list:

  • Wipe down countertops after preparing holiday meals.
  • Store sugar, flour, and baking ingredients in tightly sealed containers.
  • Clean up spills immediately, especially sugary liquids.
  • Avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
  • Check around windows, doors, and plumbing for possible entry points.

Remember, seeing a few ants could mean there's a much larger colony nearby.

🪳 2. Cockroaches: The Guests Nobody Wants to See

Nothing ruins the holiday spirit quite like spotting a cockroach scurrying across the kitchen floor while you're preparing Thanksgiving dinner.

Here in the Central Valley, certain cockroach species remain active even as the weather cools. Outdoor species may wander inside looking for shelter, while German cockroaches can establish infestations indoors where food, moisture, and warmth are readily available.

Keep cockroaches from joining your feast:

  • Take out kitchen garbage regularly.
  • Keep food covered and properly stored.
  • Clean grease and food debris from around appliances.
  • Repair leaking faucets and eliminate unnecessary moisture.
  • Avoid leaving pet food out overnight.

Cockroaches are more than just unpleasant. They can contaminate food preparation areas and introduce allergens into the home.

🥧 3. Pantry Pests: The Surprise Ingredient You Didn't Ask For

Thanksgiving baking means pulling out the flour, spices, rice, nuts, and other ingredients that may have been sitting in your pantry for months.

Unfortunately, pantry pests such as indian meal moths and certain beetles can infest stored dry goods, sometimes without homeowners realizing it.

Before you start baking Grandma's famous pumpkin pie, take a moment to inspect your ingredients.

A few pantry precautions:

  • Check dry goods for webbing, larvae, or small insects.
  • Inspect older packages before using them.
  • Store pantry staples in airtight containers.
  • Discard infested products and thoroughly clean affected shelves.

The only extra crunch in your Thanksgiving dessert should come from the pecans!

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

The holidays are busy enough without worrying about pest problems. A little extra attention to cleanliness, food storage, and potential entry points can help reduce the chances of unwanted visitors.

And while good housekeeping helps, it doesn't always prevent pest activity. Insects can enter through small openings or establish themselves in areas you rarely see.
